Petzone
Brand Strategy & Identity
Following the development of the West Pack Lifestyle corporate identity, I was tasked with creating the brand strategy and visual identity system for Petzone, a new pet superstore concept aimed at families and everyday pet lovers in the South African market.
The opportunity was to build more than a retail brand. Petzone needed to feel accessible, community-led, and welcoming across a broad lower- to middle-income audience, while still standing apart in a market where truly pet-friendly retail environments were still relatively rare. The strategy therefore had to balance emotional warmth with commercial clarity — creating a brand that could appeal across diverse ethnic groups, speak to a family audience, and work consistently in-store, in print, and across future expansion.
My role was to lead the development of the brand from a strategic and systems perspective. This included shaping the identity framework, defining the visual language, and building a set of brand guidelines that could support long-term consistency across every customer touchpoint. The identity system combined a clean, approachable wordmark with a distinctive icon family representing different pets, supported by a bright colour architecture, typography hierarchy, and clear image direction. Together, these elements created a brand that felt friendly, organized, and easy to engage with.
From a consulting and strategy perspective, the value of this project lay in translating business intent into a scalable brand system. The guidelines were not simply aesthetic rules; they were developed as a practical tool to support rollout, brand recognition, and consistency across multiple formats and teams. The result was a structured yet flexible identity that gave Petzone a recognizable personality and a strong platform for retail communication, signage, stationery, packaging extensions, and campaign development.
This project reflects my approach to brand work as both strategic and creative: aligning audience understanding, market positioning, and visual systems to build brands that are commercially effective, operationally usable, and emotionally resonant.
