GLOBAL MINING | CORPORATE REPORTING | 2004–2010
Executive Summary
From 2004 to 2010, AngloGold Ashanti’s reporting was managed as a continuous global communication programme. Each cycle involved year-round research, information gathering, writing, verification, photography and design.
The programme produced an interconnected family of reports. These included the Annual Report, Annual Financial Statements, Sustainable Development Report, Abridged Report, Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve Report, Notice of Meeting and individual country reports.
I led the design and creative direction from 2004 through 2009. For the 2010 cycle, I developed the visual concept and overall design direction before handing the final page layouts to another team.
Strategic Challenge
AngloGold Ashanti operated across multiple countries, regulatory environments and mining regions. Writers, researchers and internal specialists had to combine financial, operational, sustainability, governance and technical information from across the organisation.
The reports also had to meet several reporting requirements. These included GRI, King II, IFRS, JSE and SEC requirements, ICMM principles, JORC and SAMREC codes.
The challenge was to make this volume of information accessible without reducing its technical accuracy or regulatory value.
My Role
As Lead Designer and Creative Director, I developed the visual language and information structure across the reporting family.
My responsibilities included editorial direction, publication design, navigation, data presentation, charts, tables, maps, section openers, image selection and design continuity. I worked closely with writers, researchers, photographers, project managers and company specialists.
I also directed the visual use of annual photography produced across AngloGold Ashanti’s global operations.
The Strategic Response
I created a connected design system that could work across short summaries, detailed financial statements, sustainability reporting, technical documents and regional publications.
The design strategy placed vital information first. Key figures, performance summaries, charts and visual signposts gave readers a clear snapshot before directing them into detailed evidence.
Consistent grids, colour systems, typography and navigation connected the different reports. Regional templates allowed country reports to retain local relevance while remaining part of the global reporting family.
Business and Brand Value
The reporting system gave AngloGold Ashanti a consistent way to communicate across audiences, regions and publication types.
It supported regulatory credibility while making complex information easier to locate, understand and compare. The system also connected corporate performance with employees, communities, operations and locations through authentic global photography.
The reusable design structure supported continuity across seven reporting cycles without making each year feel visually repetitive.
What This Project Demonstrates
This project demonstrates long-term creative leadership across a complex global account. It shows my ability to manage detailed information, regulatory requirements and multiple contributors within one coherent communication system.
It also reflects my experience in information design, global creative direction, editorial systems, sustainability communication and large-scale corporate reporting.
