HEALTHCARE | EMPLOYEE BENEFITS | BRAND & COMMUNICATIONS STRATEGY
Executive Summary
In 2017, South Africa’s healthcare system reflected a deep access divide. Only 16.9% of individuals belonged to a medical aid scheme, while about seven in ten households used public healthcare as their first point of care.
Flexicare was created for working South Africans who wanted dependable private primary care but could not afford traditional medical aid. The product provided access to network doctors, medicine, dentistry, optometry, basic diagnostics and emergency services through a manageable monthly premium.
As Brand Strategist and Creative Director, I helped translate a regulated and complex healthcare product into a clear customer proposition. The work covered brand communication, member education, benefit presentation, customer guidance and sales support.
This retrospective case study expands the original launch work through market analysis, microeconomics, affordability modelling, customer segmentation and gap analysis. It also examines the relationship between South Africa’s public and private healthcare systems and the role Flexicare occupied between them.
Strategic Challenge
Flexicare needed to make private primary care more accessible without being mistaken for medical aid. The low monthly price created strong interest, but it also increased the risk that customers would assume the product covered hospitals, specialists and major medical events.
The customer experience involved several organisations. Each partner managed a different part of the policy, provider network, administration or emergency response. Conflicting prices, benefit limits and product descriptions created further communication risk.
My Role
I led the brand and creative thinking behind the launch communication. My work focused on presenting benefits clearly, explaining customer responsibilities and building confidence in the provider network.
I helped connect the product promise with member guides, benefit summaries, customer-service training and sales communication. The aim was to make a complicated healthcare product easier to understand and use.
For this portfolio analysis, I reviewed the original materials and developed a broader market, economic, customer-experience and governance strategy.
The Strategic Response
The strategy positioned Flexicare as private day-to-day care with clearly defined boundaries.
The response included audience segmentation, affordability testing, benefit prioritisation and a clearer distinction between primary care and comprehensive medical aid. It also mapped the full customer journey, from initial comparison and enrollment through provider selection, first use and retention.
The recommended operating model introduced one benefit information source, stronger document control, visible provider availability and shared service standards across all delivery partners.
Business and Brand Value
Flexicare occupied a valuable position between cash-funded private care and traditional medical aid. It offered working households more predictable access to everyday healthcare while reducing their dependence on public clinics for routine treatment.
The brand work gave the product a clearer category, a more understandable promise and a stronger foundation for customer trust. It also identified where operational performance needed to support the communication promise.
No commercial results are claimed because the surviving project documents do not contain audited enrolment, revenue or retention figures.
