NONPROFIT COMMUNICATION | ANNUAL REPORTING | EDITORIAL STRATEGY
Executive Snapshot
Cotlands needed its 2009 annual report to communicate activities and financial information. As a South African nonprofit supporting vulnerable children, it also needed to show the human meaning of its work.
How could a formal report build credibility while remaining warm and connected to the organisation’s purpose?
The Communication Challenge
The report served donors, partners and governance bodies. They needed clear evidence of responsible management, programme delivery and progress. Yet a publication dominated by formal content risked losing the emotional connection that motivates support.
The communication had to balance accountability with humanity and make detailed material easier to follow.
My Role
The project was produced at HKLM, where I worked on contract as Studio Manager. I collaborated with Leanne Winnan, Lead Designer and Illustrator, who created bespoke illustrations for each section.
My role combined creative consulting, editorial strategy and production leadership. I translated the concept into a publication system, developing the page architecture, narrative flow, information hierarchy, layout and typesetting. I also managed print preparation and production.
The Communication Response
Illustration became a navigation and storytelling device. Each section opened with artwork linked to its subject, creating a visual thread across programme information, governance, financial reporting and impact stories.
Clear typography, disciplined layouts and controlled pacing supported detailed content without making the report feel institutional. The system helped readers understand where they were and why each section mattered.
The die-cut cover introduced the theme, “Taking the first step together.” A patterned inner page appeared through the opening, creating a physical reveal that invited readers into the story. This crafted experience gave the donor-facing report a distinctive presence suited to a nonprofit organisation.
Illustration brought warmth and optimism, while the editorial structure protected clarity and credibility. The design supported the content instead of competing with it.
Organizational and Communication Value
The annual report became both an accountability document and a brand communication asset. It gave Cotlands a structured way to present its work, people and purpose while maintaining the discipline expected in nonprofit reporting.
